Varanasi, also known as Benares or Kashi, is a city located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is considered one of the most sacred cities in Hinduism, and is known for its many temples and ghats (a series of steps leading down to a body of water). It is also a major center for learning and scholarship, particularly in the fields of Hindu philosophy and theology. Many people also come to Varanasi to bathe in the Ganges River, which is considered to be a purifying and holy act.
